I
am often asked about the 3 biggest factors in creative production work: quality, timeline, and budget.
Of course, every job has distinctly different needs and every client will weigh these 3 factors differently. I hear things like ‘I want this to look and sound great, so we’ll need many revisions to make it perfect.’ Or ‘My budget is limited so this doesn’t have to be the best; I just need it done.’ These are all necessary concerns in project management, but it underlies a mindset that should be refocused a bit.
I propose a different tack. While working on a project we should only be asking: ‘Are we being effective?’ It’s a small nudge in our logic but it means that we now focus our attention on the creative process rather than obsessing over the result. This will prevent us from sacrificing quality on a tight budget, or laboring over perfection when timelines are short. It is a simple fix that forces us to continually weigh quality, timeline, and budget equally – and at all times.
